Southern-Style Light-Green Beans {Vs. 'Northern-Style' The Dandy Light-Green Edible Bean Debate}

How produce y'all cause got your green beans?  Simmered & soft Southern-style ... or still-crisp, lightly steamed & vibrantly light-green Northern-style?  That  is the 'Great Green Bean' fighting inwards our family!

When I moved from Vermont to North Carolina ... goodness, twenty years agone ... I learned at that spot was a divergence ... a big  difference ... inwards how Northerners in addition to Southerners create their fresh light-green beans.  See, there's Southern-style, simmered on the stovetop for a adept piece, soft, in addition to dullish green.  And thus there's Northern-style ...
... quick-cooked steamed, all the same a tad fleck crisp, in addition to vibrantly green.

Which means produce y'all 'take' yours?

Me?  I love, love, dear my light-green beans both  ways!  My hubby?  He detests  Southern-style light-green beans.  Even though he's a through-and-through Southern man child who grew upwards eating them at almost every meal.  Yes, his parents grew a huge garden, seat upwards light-green beans inwards the freezer, in addition to his Mom cooked Southern-style light-green beans almost every nighttime for dinner.  And Mark couldn't.  Stand.  Them.

So the outset fourth dimension I said I was making light-green beans for dinner for Mark, well, let's only tell he was less than thrilled.

He assumed I was making them the Southern way.  And I couldn't quite empathise why he was thus lackluster virtually my alternative of dinner sides.

When a bowl of lightly steamed, vibrantly green, all the same a tad fleck crisp light-green beans appeared on the table, Mark didn't quite know what to think.  These weren't the light-green beans he'd grown upwards with!

And so, a give-and-take of Northern vs. Southern light-green beans ensued.

Mark tried them.

And to his surprise, he liked them!

I've succeeded inwards making a light-green edible bean lover out of him.  They only cause got to travel cooked Northern-style.

So, what's the divergence inwards preparation, y'all ask?  Let's cause got a look.

Both Southern-style in addition to Northern-style start out amongst fresh light-green beans ...

... but thus cause got a dissimilar path from there.

Northern-style tends to purpose smaller, 'younger' beans, in addition to leaves them whole ... only trimming off the stalk end.  I similar to business upwards a footling pile of beans for slow trimming of several beans at once.  These smaller, 'younger' beans, if they're the 'string' kind, by in addition to large don't demand stringing ... at to the lowest degree that's what I've found.

The beans are thus steamed over boiling H2O inwards a steamer handbasket for virtually v to vii minutes ...

... until still-crisp-tender in addition to vibrantly green.

Season them amongst a impact of tabular array salt in addition to pepper in addition to a footling pat of butter, in addition to you've got a bowl of delicious Northern-style light-green beans ... only the means Mark likes them.

What virtually Southern-style light-green beans?

Southern-style tends to purpose larger, 'older' beans ... which produce demand to travel 'stringed' if they're the string type.  The beans are thus cutting into thirds ...

... in addition to placed inwards a pot amongst a fleck of water, olive oil, salt, in addition to pepper.  {And generally, amongst a footling bacon or fatback for flavor, likewise ... though nosotros acquire meatless amongst ours.}

The beans are thus simmered for thirty to 45 minutes until soft in addition to tender.

So, which means wins 'The Great Green Bean Debate' for you?

As for me, I'll happily cause got 'em either way!
